Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on Core Values with Louis Vuitton

Tennis legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have faced off again. Not on a grass court or a clay court, but atop a snowy mountain. This wasn’t a match, but a unique photoshoot for Louis Vuitton’s esteemed Core Values campaign

Captured by Annie Leibovitz, it highlights the camaraderie and mutual respect between these two titans of tennis, set against the stunning backdrop of Italy’s Dolomites mountain range, home to some of the most beautiful tennis courts in the world.

The concept of this campaign is both simple and profound: illustrating the journey of two sports icons who have transcended their rivalry to form a lasting friendship. Louis Vuitton has long celebrated journeys that turn into legends, and Federer and Nadal embody this theme perfectly.

Both athletes are seen ascending a snowy summit, equipped with Louis Vuitton packs—Federer with the classic Monogram Christopher backpack, and Nadal with the Monogram Eclipse version. These accessories are symbols of timeless style and dynamic strength, respectively.

Getting Federer and Nadal to join forces for this photoshoot was perhaps easier than it sounds, given their relationship. As Federer explained to GQ, “Rafa shares similar values and mutual respect, and he is a special friend and rival who has played a key role in my development as a professional athlete, competitor, and person.” Nadal echoed this sentiment, expressing his excitement about collaborating with Federer and being part of a campaign featuring such an iconic brand.

Federer and Nadal’s rivalry is one of the most celebrated in sports history. Their matches, particularly the 2008 Wimbledon final, are legendary. Over the years, their relationship has evolved from fierce competition to deep mutual respect and friendship. “On the court, we have challenged each other to evolve, improve, and reach heights we never would have managed without the rivalry,” Federer noted. Off the court, their bond has grown into a lifelong friendship driven by shared values and genuine personalities.

Both athletes reflected on their careers and the “summits” they have climbed. Federer highlighted his eight Wimbledon titles and the 2017 Australian Open victory over Nadal as significant achievements. “After a challenging 2016 season post knee surgery, the road to recovery was long… However, the stars aligned, and the determination paid off,” Federer recalled. Nadal, too, referenced the 2017 Australian Open final, despite losing to Federer. He also emphasised his 14 Roland Garros titles as a pinnacle of his career, marking his special relationship with Paris and France.

While Federer has had more time to travel and explore new places with his family since retiring, Nadal is still actively competing but looks forward to future travels. “I haven’t had the chance to properly explore them [the cities he has visited], but I am sure that the day I am not actively playing tennis anymore I will have the chance to come back and properly explore,” Nadal shared.

Louis Vuitton has long facilitated sporting achievements, specifically tennis, with recent campaigns involving Spanish young gun Carlos Alcaraz and Australian Open Champion Jannik Sinner.
