In a bittersweet moment for car enthusiasts, the last Audi R8 has rolled off the assembly line at Audi’s Böllinger Höfe plant near Stuttgart, marking the end of an era for the “sensible supercar.”
This final example, a Performance Quattro Edition, shines in Vegas Yellow, boasting the carbon-fibre exterior package and stunning 20-inch alloy rims.
Unlike its predecessors destined for eager customers, this special R8 is headed for a different journey, it will find its place of honour at Audi’s official museum in Ingolstadt.
What makes this R8 truly special is its heart, a naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine borrowed from the Lamborghini Huracán, delivering a thrilling 602 horsepower and 413 pound-foot of torque.
Paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and Audi’s legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive system, this powerhouse propels the R8 from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds, faster than the McLaren F1 and Ferrari F50, with a top speed of around 330 km/h. These numbers sum up the essence of speed and performance that the R8 has embodied throughout its journey.
The decision to bid farewell to the R8 comes amidst a changing automotive landscape, where electric vehicles are becoming increasingly prominent. Similar to the Audi TT’s recent discontinuation, the R8 faced a similar fate initially, slated for closure in 2023. However, a surge in demand, with a 49% spike in sales totalling 1,591 units, prompted a temporary reprieve.
Despite its loyal fanbase and impressive performance credentials, the R8 remained Audi’s “slowest-selling global product.” With production numbers totalling less than 44,000 units since its debut in 2007, the R8 leaves behind a legacy of driving excitement and technological prowess.
As the Audi R8 bids adieu, it also marks the end of Volkswagen Group’s V10 era, coinciding with Lamborghini’s transition away from the Huracán. While there’s no official word on a direct successor to the R8, its departure leaves a void in the automotive world.
