Tommy Shelby Returns in New Peaky Blinders Movie

Time to bust out the tweed and flat caps—Peaky Blinders is coming back. Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby in a new movie coming to Netflix, made in association with BBC Film.

Murphy, the Oscars winner who brought Tommy Shelby to life, shared his excitement about returning to the iconic role.
"It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”
The film will continue the story of the Shelby family, picking up where the series left off in 2022. For those that have been living under a rock, its’ set in Birmingham between 1919 and 1934, following the rise and fall of the Shelby family as they navigate a world of radical social, economic, and political change. The new movie promises to be an epic continuation of the multi-award-winning saga.
Reuniting the Creative Team
Tom Harper, who directed episodes of the show’s first season in 2013, will direct the new film. He expressed his enthusiasm about returning to the Peaky Blinders world:
“When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive. Peaky has always been a story about family—and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”
Steven Knight, the creator of the original show, is writing the script for the film. Knight teased that the movie will be an “explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full on Peaky Blinders at war.”
There is a strong possibility the film will be set during the World War II era, adding a new layer of much needed intensity.

Since its final season in 2022, Peaky Blinders has continued to influence popular culture. Its classy approach to menswear sparked a fashion craze, and the show remains a source of inspiration for many. Actor Leo Woodall, for example, credits the show for inspiring his acting career. “I was watching Peaky Blinders and I put on my Peaky Blinders-style hat, did my Tommy Shelby impression and thought, ‘I wanna be an actor,’” he told Netflix.

The last time we saw Tommy Shelby, he was riding off on a white horse, intent on starting a new life. The plot of the new movie is still under wraps, and we don’t have much to go off, but fans can expect a thrilling continuation of the Shelby family’s story. When Will it Release?
Filming for the film is set to start in the West Midlands this September. Given this timeline, it is likely to be released in late 2025 or more likely, 2026. We will need to be patient, but the wait promises to be worth it.
