The Only Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss in South Korea Can't Be Driven

Writer: TJ Editorial Team

There’s only one Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss in South Korea, a car that will catch your attention at an instant, but you won’t see it cruising through the city streets any time soon.

The barchetta-style body, completely roofless and without a windscreen, makes it illegal under Korean automotive laws.

Built in 2009, only 75 of these ultra-rare SLR Stirling Moss cars exist worldwide. Each one is a tribute to Formula 1 and racing legend Stirling Moss and takes inspiration from the iconic 300 SLR, a combination of modern supercar performance with classic racing pedigree.

The limited edition SLR was a roofless speedster, and designed to honour Moss’s victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia where he helped Mercedes to their first win at the event in nearly 25 years.

During that dry period for Mercedes, their racing program was cut back to solely Formula One, so when it came time for Moss to race in the prestigious Italian event, the brand had to take their Formula One car and modify it into the 300 SLR (W 196S).

It was a relatively easy task for the teams’ engineers, who increased engine capacity, extended the wheelbase and added a large fuel tank with a new streamlined body to support two drivers.

Moss described the car as “Not an easy one to drive, not forgiving, but it had a tremendous amount of power.”

When Moss took home the win, it cemented the car in the history books for its driving capabilities but also its unique look. The 75 models produced in memory of the event in 2009 originally retailed for about $1.54 million USD, but due to the rarity and history of the car you will struggle to find one under the $3 million mark.

This particular example located in Korea, is confined to private property or exhibitions, with more of an emphasis on its presence than driving capabilities.
