Guy Ritchie has always understood that what a character wears on their wrist says as much about them as the dialogue. Season one of The Gentlemen made that clear, with over six million pounds worth of watches across the eight episodes. Season two, which landed on Netflix earlier this month, goes further. The prop team and costume designer Pierre Yves Gayraud have put together a watch rotation across the main cast that reads less like a product placement list and more like a deliberate character study. Here’s everything on screen and why it works.
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
The Duke graduates to a Rolex Daytona in season two, white dial, black subdials, the configuration collectors call the Panda. It’s a 40mm reference on a steel bracelet and it sits on Eddie’s wrist during some of the season’s more high-pressure moments, which given the nature of the show is most of them. The Daytona has been the default luxury chronograph for a certain kind of successful man for decades, and on a Duke running a criminal cannabis empire from a country estate, it reads as entirely credible. The Panda reference in particular carries weight with people who know what they’re looking at, and on a show that rewards that kind of attention, the choice is deliberate.
Omega Speedmaster 300M
Theo James wears several watches across the season, which mirrors the way the character moves between contexts, country house, criminal negotiation, European travel. During one of the Italian sequences, he wears a gold Omega Speedmaster, a departure from the steel Daytona and a piece that reads as more personal and less performative. James wears Omega in real life too, which gives the choice an authenticity that borrowed watches sometimes lack.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso
The most interesting watch detail of the season is the shared JLC Reverso across Eddie and Susie. The Reverso is an Art Deco flip-watch originally designed in 1931 for polo players who needed a watch case that could be turned face-down to protect the crystal during play. Eddie wears a Tribute model across three different references through the season, large case, clean dial, applied indices. Susie wears a Lady Reverso. The matching watches across the two lead characters who spend most of the season circling each other says more than most of the actual dialogue does. The costume department earned that one.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar
Few watches communicate inherited wealth as naturally as the Royal Oak, and the Perpetual Calendar reference Eddie wears in season two is one of the most complex versions Audemars Piguet makes. The octagonal case and integrated bracelet are Gérald Genta’s work from 1972, unchanged in its essential architecture since. Alongside the time, the Perpetual Calendar tracks the day, date, month, moon phase and leap years, requiring no manual adjustment for the differing lengths of months. On a jet-setting Duke expanding his criminal enterprise across Europe, it’s the right watch for the wrong business.
Panerai Luminor
Ray Winstone’s Bobby Glass spends most of season two in a luxury prison spa, which is exactly as entertaining as it sounds, and he’s wearing a Panerai throughout. The Luminor’s chunky case and sandwich dial are a natural fit for a man who runs his empire from a towelling robe. Panerai has always carried a certain bruiser energy, Italian military heritage wrapped in a 44mm case, and on Bobby Glass it lands correctly.
