A Gentleman's Guide to Manners

Writer: TJ Editorial Team

Manners maketh man. A gentlemanly phrase you most likely have heard at some point in your life, but what does that actually mean? Our interpretation is that a true gentleman is not defined by his wealth, status, or wardrobe, but by his character. Etiquette and manners are the cornerstones of that character which shape the way he moves through the world with confidence and respect.

Modern etiquette is certainly still a thing and is so much more than outdated formalities. It’s more so about how you conduct yourself in a way that earns respect, builds strong relationships, and leaves a positive impression.

Here’s how a man of refinement carries himself in the 8 aspects of life.

The Art of Conversation

  • Listen More Than You Speak – A gentleman values others’ words as much as his own. Engage in active listening, make eye contact, and avoid interrupting. It’s important to surround yourself with valuable people. To widen your own knowledge base, the right books are a good way to do this.
  • Speak With Purpose – Choose your words carefully. Be direct but courteous, and never raise your voice in frustration.
  • Avoid Complaining – Nobody enjoys a chronic complainer. If you must voice dissatisfaction, do so with grace and offer solutions, not just problems.
  • Mind Your Language – Profanity has its place, but it’s rarely in polite conversation.

Social Conduct

  • Punctuality Matters – Being late is disrespectful. Arrive on time or, even better, a few minutes early.
  • Greet With Confidence – A firm handshake, eye contact, and a genuine smile set the tone for any encounter.
  • Remember Names – Making an effort to remember and use someone’s name is a simple but powerful way to show respect.
  • Know When to Put the Phone Away – Checking your phone mid-conversation signals disinterest. Give people your full attention.

Dining Etiquette

  • Wait Before Eating – Don’t start eating until everyone has been served, unless your host insists otherwise.
  • Use Utensils Properly – Avoid the caveman approach—learn how to hold your knife and fork correctly.
  • Napkin on the Lap – As soon as you sit down, place your napkin on your lap. Use it, don’t ignore it.
  • Express Gratitude – Always thank your host and servers. Kindness is a mark of refinement.

Dressing the Part

  • Dress for the Occasion – A gentleman knows when to wear a suit and when to dress down. If unsure, it’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.
  • Invest in Quality, Not Quantity – A well-fitted suit, polished shoes, and a classic watch go a long way.
  • Mind the Details – Wrinkled shirts, scuffed shoes, and unkempt grooming ruin even the best outfits.

Conduct in Public Spaces

  • Hold the Door Open – Not just for women, but for anyone behind you. It’s a small gesture with a big impact.
  • Respect Personal Space – Stand at a comfortable distance and be mindful of body language.
  • Keep Noise Levels in Check – Whether talking, laughing, or taking a phone call, be aware of your volume.
  • Give Up Your Seat – If someone needs it more than you, offer it. Simple courtesy never goes unnoticed.

Digital Etiquette

  • Think Before You Post – Social media is permanent. Avoid oversharing, and never air grievances publicly.
  • Be Present – Constantly checking your phone in social settings is a sign of poor manners.
  • Email With Care – Keep messages professional, clear, and free of unnecessary exclamation points or emojis.

Handling Disagreements

  • Keep Your Cool – A gentleman never lets his emotions dictate his actions.
  • Argue With Respect – If you must disagree, do so with dignity. Avoid personal attacks.
  • Know When to Walk Away – Not every battle is worth fighting. Sometimes, silence speaks volumes.

The Importance of Gratitude

  • Say ‘Thank You’ Often – Gratitude should be expressed sincerely and frequently.
  • Send a Handwritten Note – A simple thank-you card after a dinner or a favor is a mark of true class.
  • Acknowledge Effort – Recognize and appreciate the work others do, no matter how small.

A gentleman’s etiquette is not about rigid rules but about being mindful of how your actions affect those around you. At its core, it’s about respect—respect for yourself, for others, and for the spaces you occupy.
