“You never really own a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it for the next generation.” It’s the inspiring phrase you see all over vintage Patek Philippe advertisements, perfectly reflecting the brand’s commitment to long-lasting timepieces.
Founded in 1839 by Antoine Patek and Adrien Philippe, this Swiss watchmaker has built a legacy as one of the most prestigious companies in the world. Known for their craftsmanship and innovation, the watches they make are revered not just as luxury timepieces but as family heirlooms.
Here are some of the coolest vintage Patek Philippe watches we’ve found.
Celebrities with Vintage Style
It’s no surprise celebrities love their watches, often sporting brands like Rolex, Richard Mille, Audemars Piguet, Cartier, Omega, and Jaeger-LeCoultre. But Patek always find a way to stand out. In Particular the vintage style watches that date back to the company’s foundation in 1839.
Brad Pitt Wears the 1950s Patek Philippe Ref. 2526
Brad Pitt has recently emerged as a vintage watch enthusiast. So much so, at the One Love premiere, Pitt wore a Patek Philippe reference 2526, a 1950s dress watch with an automatic movement and an enamel dial.
This model, not commonly seen on celebrities, is prized among horological fans. Patek produced around 3,000 ref. 2526s between 1953 and 1960, but only 600 are known today, valued at over $100,000. Pitt’s watch, worn with an unusual bracelet, sent watch experts into a frenzy. This follows his earlier appearance with a Vacheron Constantin 222, suggesting his growing interest in vintage timepieces.
John Mayer Courtside with His Vintage Patek Philippe 3970EJ
John Mayer has built one of the world’s best collections through his love and knowledge of vintage watches. He often wears his Patek Philippe ref. 3970EJ in yellow gold, even to casual events like Lakers games.
This 36mm watch, introduced in 1986, is a perpetual calendar chronograph. Though once more affordable, its value has increased due to Mayer’s influence and the growing awareness of its worth.
Hayley Bieber’s Vintage Patek Philippe Nautilus
Hailey Bieber has recently been spotted in a vintage Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 4700 with a 27mm gold dial. Bieber, who has a penchant for high-end watches, has also been seen in various Rolex and Audemars Piguet models. Her latest choice reflects a trend towards smaller, classic pieces, according to Yoni Ben-Yehuda from Material Good, the boutique where she bought the watch.
It’s the perfect example of unique taste and setting your own trends.
Sylvester Stallone's Grandmaster Chime
Sylvester Stallone’s Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime recently sold for $5.4 million at a Sotheby’s auction, well above its retail price. Patek Philippe CEO Thierry Stern and others were unhappy with Stallone selling the watch just three years after acquiring it, as it frustrates clients who might have waited years for such a rare piece.
Despite this, Stallone had every right to sell the watch, and while his quick sale may impact his relationship with Patek Philippe, the auction result proved the watch’s high value.
Jay-Z Shows off One of the Rarest Watches in the World
Jay-Z recently showcased one of the rarest watches, the Patek Philippe 2499. This watch, a popular piece among collectors, has a rich history and is considered one of the greatest wristwatches ever made. Jay-Z wore it at an afterparty following the Oscars, catching the attention of watch enthusiasts.
Tony Kavak, a private collector, helped Jay-Z acquire the iconic watch, which had been meticulously restored to its original state by Patek Philippe. As watch expert John Reardon said, “The design of the 2499 was a natural progression of the perpetual calendar chronograph into a larger case for mid-century Patek Philippe.”
Kavin Hart's World Timer
Kevin Hart is serious about watches. His collection includes several Patek Philippe pieces, including the 40th Anniversary Edition Nautilus 5976/1G in 18K white gold and the 5712R Nautilus Moon Phase in rose gold. The 5712R features a 40mm ribbed dial, sapphire glass back, and yellow gold hour markers, designed by Gerald Genta.
The above watch is his vintage style “World Timer”, first introduced in 1937 and having undergone multiple updates to modernise city names.
Andy Warhol’s 1962 Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar
Andy Warhol was said to have amassed an impressive 313 watches throughout his life, including rare models from Rolex, Cartier, and Piaget. After his death in 1987, his collection was auctioned at Sotheby’s. This year, Warhol’s prized Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar, Reference 3448, will be auctioned at Christie’s in New York on December 5.
The watch features a 39 mm 18-karat yellow gold case, a silvered dial by Stern Frères, gold hour markers, a moon display, and day and month windows. Unveiled in 1962, this model housed Patek’s first self-winding perpetual calendar movement and is one of only 450 made. Expected to sell for $350,000 to $600,000, the auction will also feature other notable watches, including a Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon and an F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain.
