Patrick Stewart passed away this week. He was 86, a knight of the realm, a Shakespearean actor, Captain Picard, Professor X, and for anyone paying attention, one of the most quietly well-dressed men of the last fifty years.
He grew up working class in West Yorkshire, left school at 15, and spent the better part of his life in rehearsal rooms and on stage before Hollywood found him. None of that background suggests a man with a particular relationship to clothes. But look at the photos and a consistent logic runs through all of it, from the TNG years in light wash Levi’s and a loose Oxford shirt at LAX, to the turtlenecks he wore so often they became a signature, to the final dinner shots in a zip jersey with a glass of champagne. The clothes always fit. Nothing was ever trying too hard. He got dressed and walked out the door, and the result was better for it.
Below is a collection of his best moments.
