Apocalypse Estate: The Billionaires Building Doomsday Bunkers

Writer: TJ Editorial Team

In the event of an apocalypse, one would think they should accept their fate.

But not the top 0.0001%. Instead, they’re hatching master plans to escape such an event that could be the end of the world as we know it. Whether it be the unsettling rise of AI or the recent scare from a global pandemic, they’re putting their faith in money.

Aside from splurging on yachts and supercars, many of the world’s billionaires have been snatching up private islands and building doomsday bunkers, fit with a fully self-sustaining ecosystem. So what do they know that we don’t?

Mark Zuckerberg Doomsday Bunker Hawaii

The first on our list? None other than Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, who recently started construction on his privately owned land on the northeast side of Kauai, Hawaii.

It’s shielded by a 6-foot wall and involves an expansive compound known as Ko’olau Ranch. Spanning 1,400 acres with a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter, it set Zuckerberg back $270 million, which is hardly a dent in his net worth of $171 Billion (USD).

Due to strict non-disclosure agreements in place, workers are tight-lipped about the development, meaning there is little we know about what Zuck’s true intentions are. Despite this, it’s likely the estate will be the first location he and his family flee to in the event catastrophe strikes.

“It’s fight club. We don’t talk about fight club.” – David, a former contract employee, describing the secrecy surrounding the project.

It’s also likely the bunker itself will be self-sustaining, with necessary storage fit to serve the Meta Mogul and his closest family for extended periods of time.

Peter Thiel - Billionaire Doomsday Bunker New Zealand

Among the list are Open AI’s CEO Sam Altman and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, who have an ‘arrangement’ to seek refuge at one of Thiel’s New Zealand properties in the case of a catastrophic event.

Although it won’t be quite the billionaire bunker that Zuckerberg plans to build, as Thiels plans to construct one beside Lake Wanaka were blocked by a local community council in 2022.

Independent commissioners found that Thiel’s proposed bunker design would substantially detract from the natural landscape and scenic beauty of the area, and would have been visible from significant vantage points.

There’s no saying that Thiel won’t develop his land in the future, and chances are he’ll be trying his luck at a different style of bunker.

Billionaire Bunkers - Survival Condo

In the heart of Kansas, hidden by a barbed-wire fence and guarded by 24-hour security, this high-tech compound boasts deluxe living spaces almost comparable to the most luxurious apartments we see today.

It’s fit with a pool, climbing wall, gym, gun range, medical bay, food stores (with 7 years of supplies) and a cinema, all constructed within a shell of an Atlas Missile Silo from the Cold War era. It spans 15 floors, extends 200 feet underground and has nine-foot-thick walls of steel-reinforced concrete.

Unlike other billionaire bunkers, you can purchase an apartment in the Survival Condo for a hefty fee. A full-floor apartment costs $2.4 million, whilst a half floor costs $1.3 million.

Adjacent to the main complex, owner Larry Hall has secured a second silo for further conversion into a similar condo complex, providing additional secure accommodation for those preparing for doomsday scenarios.

Billionaire Bunkers - Elon Musk Mars

Perhaps the most audacious plan of all, Elon Musk aims to colonise Mars, starting with transporting one million people to the Red Planet in the near future.

Musk’s ambition certainly takes a vastly different approach. While other billionaires are busy building apocalyptic protection for themselves, Musk plans to prolong the human race by saving the masses if such an event occurs.

He continues to mention that humanity must become multi-planetary to surpass potential threats, and the SpaceX Starship plays a pivotal role in this.

Other billionaires who have purchased substantial amounts of land include Richard Branson, Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey.

Billionaire Bunkers

Amidst the grand visions and ambitious plans, one cannot ignore the common thread that all of these projects have together: An apocalypse.

Whether it be driven by altruism or self-interest, the pursuit of Martian colonisation and survival bunkers suggests there is a shared acknowledgement of existential risks facing humanity.

Only time will tell if the billionaire’s building doomsday bunkers will ever actually make use of them.
